When I bought the Dare today, the salesman told me NOT to buy aftermarket chargers. He told me they will not charge the Dare correctly and possibly overcharge them and/or cause the batteries to have a memory, and reducing the life.

I would like to buy a second charger to keep at work ( I work 24 hour shifts ) , but dont want to spend the $$$ on an OEM charger.

Some chargers I saw on the internet claim to have chips inside that detect the charge of the battery and turn off when charged.   Even the cheap $6 chargers say this.  I find this hard to believe though.

Your thoughts and experiences on aftermarket chargers are appreciated.

Thanks

From the back of the OEM charger:

Input:  110/240 volts 50/60 hz .2A
Output 5.1V .7A

If the third party charger meets that and has the proper mini connector it will work just fine.

Any comments to the contrary from someone (Verizon employee) is self serving trying to meet a sales quota.

Chargers are not as complex as people seem to think they are. As long as the input/output specifications are correct for the phone (and the build quality is up to par) then there should not be any problems.

Trying not to threadjack but I guess I am, I have a charger kicking around manufacture is DVE and the input is the same as the OEM but the output is +.5V   0.5A
Will this charger work? or should I not bother with it?

Thanks,
Jonathan

I have used various chargers for various items in various countries without problems.  Not all of them have been OEM for the particular device.

A half volt variance and a .2 A variance I don't think will hurt a thing.  Your call to make.

You'll be fine, but i'd recommend something more powerful Jonathan.

Voltage is the main thing you need to worry about here.  I don't know how much of a difference is too much, but if the voltage is too high it could potentially fry the phone.

The amperage on the other hand will tell you how fast the device will charge.  So with a lower amperage than OEM it will take longer to charge.

FYI my father is an electrician so I do have some experience with these things.  Electronics are very delicate so be careful.

As mentioned a good rule of thumb is to make sure the voltage is the same and only a minor difference in amperage.

A second good rule is "If the phone says it does not like it unplug it". It will tell you if it does not like it or recognize it.
