So I read that you can use the phone as a modem. Is this basicly the same as getting a USB broadband stick and putting it in your laptop? I'm assuming you connect your laptop via bluetooth to the phone and then are able to surf the web from your laptop. Is this correct? If so at what speeds can you do this? Is it dailup speeds or the same speeds as the phone surfs the web? Also if I'm understanding this correctly, does this service require any additionaly services/fees?

Also, its noted that this phone does not have Wi-Fi...  Does this mean you can't connect the phone to a router or what? Benefit would be faster speeds I'm guessing, anything else?

EDIT: VCast Pak no longer supports use of your phone as a modem.  It is an additional Charge. (Thanks to K8te)

Thanks. I would have the 450 anytime minutes + unlimited everything else so according to your post I would not have any additional fees. Pretty nice. WiFi I can do without. I get service pretty much everywhere I would need it anyways.

I'd LOVE any phone with wi-fi.  Its ridiculously faster than cell reception, and comes in handy all over WiFi hotspots.  Most hotels and cafes have it now, so you could switch over to WiFi while at a hotel and browse at your computers speeds.  Very handy.

You'll have to go into your laptop settings an enable it as a modem whether you connect to it through BlueTooth or USB connection.  I'd recommend the USB though.

Keep in mind that this connection is always through the cell tower.  Any time your signal may weaken, you may have pages or downloads that lag forever or lock up.  VZW offers cards and usb sticks that plug into your laptop for internet connections that work via satellite.  These speeds are just as fast as WiFi usually, and you get signal pretty much anywhere you go.  No relying on cell towers, OR wifi.  But these cards require a monthly fee just like cell phones do.  Just another option worth mentioning.

You can't tether your phone to your laptop as a modem with the $15 V Cast plan.

From the TOC at http://support.vzw.com/terms/v_cast_vpak.html:

Quote
V CAST VPak Terms and Conditions
Subject to Get It Now®, Mobile Web and V CAST Music Agreements. V CAST phone required. V CAST Coverage Area required to manage alerts and browse, preview, purchase, download or stream music and video content on your phone. You can download 3D games anywhere within the V CAST or Get It Now Coverage Areas. Not all video clips are available for download. No other data services included. V CAST Alerts are charged in accordance with your TXT Messaging plan. Verizon Wireless is not responsible and assumes no liability for V CAST content, including, without limitation, any defamation, obscenity or profanity you may encounter through use of V CAST. V CAST cannot be used: (i) for access to the Internet, intranets or other data networks except as permitted via Get It Now; (ii) for any applications that tether your phone to laptops, personal computers or other devices for any purpose; (iii) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games unless offered through Get It Now; (iv) for sustained, high-bandwidth applications, including, without limitation, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, Voice over IP (VoIP), or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; and/or (v) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. We reserve the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, and to deny or terminate data services, without notice, to anyone we believe is using V CAST in any prohibited manner, whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels, or whose usage exceeds reasonable levels. Verizon Wireless reserves the right to terminate service upon expiration of your Customer Agreement term. V CAST is for individual use only and is not for resale. Phone will end data call and session after a minimum of 30 seconds of inactivity. Content providers, service functionality and menu order may change without notice.

That means you can't use your phone as a modem. Verizon does have a plan that allows you to do this but cost 59.99 a month for a 5 GB monthly allowance. It's called BroadbandAccess.

If for some reason (hacking or your phone just happens to have it enabled) you use your phone as a laptop modem, you are violating the terms and conditions and are subject to whatever penalty Verizon sees appropriate.

You're correct Kate - I was wrong, its no longer an option with the $15 plan.  Good find.
I confirmed this with VZW C.S.
Let me say that I think it's ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that they charge you an additional $59 on top of your normal plan to use this "built in" feature of the phone you paid for.  In other words, you pay the same price that a SATELLITE card for your laptop and are restricted to cell towers with its use unlike the satelite card.  Just another way VZW nickles and dimes its customers.  What a crock.

Verizon may have the best overall coverage but they like to restrict their phones (custom UI and blocking features) so that you have to pay for everything you do on it. Oh well, I still like my Dare and I'll stick with Verizon for now.

Yup, I'm not a fan of them for that reason.
As soon as another company like AT&T is able to prove their coverage is the same as VZW, VZW is screwed.  They've nickled and dimed customers for years, and overcharged for everything....they've been the slowest to grab NEW phones, and its all been under the blanket of having "the most reliable wireless network".....

I wanted to tether the Dare to my Laptop, but I would hate to pay another $15.00 per month.  I would already pay the $15.00 for VPak.  Heck they even limit you on the BBA Connect package to 5GB as well.
