Verizon released a new app today, Guitar Tuner. "It combines the functionality of a live pitch tuner, a metronome and a pitch pip all on your phone. Using the standard in-phone microphone, Guitar Tuner listens and provides real-time feedback letting you know if you're on tempo and in pitch, anytime, anywhere."  It costs $3.49 monthly, and $20.49 for unlimited.

WOW! That's a whole lot to pay for an app. Idk if it's even worth it. If anyone gets it let us know how it is, please.

Well 20 bucks is fair in my opinion being that is around the price of a tuner, but it depends how accurate it is.  And if it is not a chromatic tuner is a ripoff, I might try a month to test it.

edit:
Well I'm happy to say this is a good app.  The pitch pipe can play 7 octaves (did not expect that), the metronome goes up to 220 bpm, and the tuner is chromatic (and accurate).  You have to tune with harmonics, though, as the mic on the phone cannot pick up low frequencies well enough for tuning.

This is very useful - I am going to pay full price for it.

I might have to give it a try since I only have 5 tuners right now.  That would give me 6, one for each string  Grin Glad I don't have any 12 stings.

wow pay that much for a guitar tuner. Stupid network im on.

Verizon, if your service wasnt the best i would switch RIGHT over to ATnT for the iPhone or right over to Tmobile for the GoogleG1 - Your service rocks like none-other, but your phones are not that great at all, and you love to make us pay for things like email, Wiki, aFlix, and guitar tuners. Grow up.

Not that I need it, but I gotta say that it is actually a unique and neat idea.  It seems most people aren't traveling musicians, but I can see this being really handy if you are.  For one, it is ALOT cheaper than a dedicated unit (though, obvious not quite as many features), and it is nice to have everything in one small package..

ok. i have to agree on that issue. I mean it is a very different app idea, and i like that. Lets just hope this it the start of new creative use apps. Except for the fact that the iphone and G1 already have lots of cool original stuff. Oh and in the future when verizon releases cool new apps guess what, they will cost you more than a gallon of gas. Lame. I stand with my original opinion, i dont have enough money for this phone to be really cool EVEN when they actually release new cool apps.

I gotta say, I really don't get you.  You are happy that we are getting original things, but then shoot it down because Apple and G1 have original things.  Isn't it GOOD that we are joining them in cool original things?!

Yes, I do have some problem with cost, but in looking, it is no more expensive than other similar tuners, and it is one less thing to carry.

Anyway, i guess i understand some frustration, but I am happy to see Verizion being creative.. maybe over time we will have all these magical apps people want (but never actually define)..

im with icculus. i think its a cool idea, but how many of us will need or want this? and i wont pay 20 bux for any app. .... on second thought, i would pay 20 bux for an app that unlocked my phone to be able to download from 3rd parties.  but thats it

this is a phenomenal app for anyone from the casual guitar player to the hardcore musician - I think it covers a lot of ground and its certainly original - just because the app doesnt apply to you in one shape or another doesnt mean we should shoot it down. Like if they came out with some AutoCAD feature for engineers to use I know I wouldnt care for it because it doesnt apply to me, but i would still be impressed

Haha there's no way in hell AutoCAD will ever be on a phone. But that will be cool since i'm studying to be an engineer. Bottom line is, whether you're a musician or not the app is still a cool idea. Never i will get it, though.

in a brief rebuttal, and i hope you DO get me this time, i am not applauding and shooting down the same thing. I am simply saying that it is nice to see something come out that isn't another email app, banking, or something that you can just go on the internet to find (wiki?!) - I don't play guitar, and my keyboard is always in tune, so i don't need this app, although i think its a wonderful idea for those who are interested in it. And i am not saying that the Phone and G1 are gods, I am just saying that this phone has been out for a while now on the best network, and yet this is all we have developed for it?! The iPhone has TONS of random stuff, and from videos i have watched on the Google G1, OH MY GOD, they are open and developing amazing ideas for that thing (too bad tmobile blows)

So yea, It is great that we might be getting more interesting apps for the dare, what isnt cool is that it is taking weeks for one app to be released, and they all cost a stupid random amount of money. Im trying to think of a really cool app in my head that i would pay a bunch for and i just dono. Bla.

Plus its nice to be optimistic, but i wouldnt go as far as saying that its great Verizon IS heading in the sweet application world of the iPhone or G1 only because of a little guitar tuner. If something sweet comes out next week, i may be proven wrong, but because of the past history with verizon, im not getting my hopes up!

Now if you do own a guitar dont you think you would own a guitar tuner? I have 2 guitars and a drum set and have 2 guitar tuners and 1 drum head chromatic tuner. Then what happens if you are really phyched to play and you are tuning your guitar and then a call comes in and you either have to answer it or ignore it and wait for the app to load again. That would lose all my momentum if it were me. I would then have to let out my stress on my drumset ;-)
